EARLY CHILDHOOD
Children and their families, age 0 to 5 years, have access to programs and services. Activities are developed for improvement in the areas of gross motor, fine motor, socialization, and communication. Children build a foundation to succeed in the school environment.

If parents have concerns about the development of their infant, toddler, or preschool child, or if a school age child has a disability that adversely affects school achievement, the family and child can be evaluated for services.

EARLY ON
Early On coordinates services and resources for children and their families, birth to 3 years or who may be at risk for developmental delays. Appropriate services are provided in the natural environment of the child, usually in the home or childcare setting with established conditions.

EVALUATIONS FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION ELIGIBILITY

HOMEBOUND
When students are homebound or hospitalized and unable to attend school for more than five days, a homebound teacher can be assigned to provide two hours of instruction in the home each week. The homebound teacher delivers materials from school and provides assistance as needed.

HOMESCHOOLING
A child shall not be required to attend public school if the child is being educated at the child's home by his or her parent or legal guardian in an organized educational program in the subject areas of reading, spelling, mathematics, science, history, civics, literature, writing and English grammar.

Adult Transition - Individuals who qualify for special education and have reached the age of 18 have the opportunity to participate in LESA Adult Transition Programs. This program prepares adult students for the next phase of their lives. Adult/students work on preparing themselves for the work-force and for adult living.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
Occupational Therapists work with students who have developmental delays in feeding, fine motor skills, and activities of daily living.

PHYSICAL THERAPY
Physical Therapists work with students who have developmental delays in their mobility and gross motor skills.

PSYCHOLOGIST SERVICES
School Psychologists administer assessments, interpret results, and make recommendations regarding special education eligibility, programs, or services. Psychological tests are used to assess students’ cognitive level of functioning. Psychological assessments may also include achievement tests, intelligence tests, perceptual test, personality test, adaptive behavior measures, and behavior scales.

SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK
Social Workers assess the social and emotional development status and make recommendations regarding special education eligibility and services. They assist in the development and implementation of behavior plans and social skills training.

LESA assists districts with compliance to federal and state special education rules and regulations. LESA also investigates parent complaints regarding potential violations of the delivery of special education programs or services.

SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM CONSULTING
Program Consultants support students who are eligible for special education services, their families, and the educational staff who work with the students in the school setting through in-service training and collaboration with teachers.

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE SERVICES
Speech and Language Therapist or Pathologists evaluate speech/language/communication abilities to determine developmental appropriateness. When significant delays are indicated, speech and language therapy services are provided to support children’s communication abilities for success in their academic setting. Therapy is provided to improve abilities in articulation, language development, social, com, munication, fluency and normalized voice quality.
